About Sew your Wardrobe

The Sew Your Wardrobe group meets on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month, and the 5th by arrangement.  We sew from 10.30am to 4pm.  The area can accommodate up to 8 sewists comfortably.

Sew Your Wardrobe
is for
intermediate to advanced sewists.  This group is good for you if you can work independently with just a little group consultation now and then.  For example, 20 minutes in an entire session for help pinning a hem or figuring out a particularly complex technique.  To be an intermediate or advanced sewist you will have more or less achieved most of the following:

  • Sewn different types of closures such as buttonholes, zipper fly, invisible zipper

  • Had experience with some other intermediate or advanced construction techniques, such as making a shirt with a collar, collar stand and tower plackets

  • Done some fit adjustments, such as grading between sizes, forward head/shoulder, narrow/broad back, full/small bust, etc

If you’re not sure whether your skills are developed enough, then please feel free to contact Cate, 0275 477 773, to discuss coming along to a trial session.

If you are a beginner sewist, or you haven’t sewn for a long time and are feeling a bit rusty, then there are some wonderful and good value for money, or completely free, teaching resources on the internet.  For specific techniques, you can turn to YouTube for channels such as Seamwork, Sew Over It, Professor Pincushion, Made to Sew, Melly Sews, Glory Allan and many more.  It’s also really worthwhile doing a beginner sewist course.  We recommend Learn How To Sew Clothing by Closet Core, which includes a top, skirt and pants pattern.  Another course is the Seamwork Learn To Sew Clothing course, which includes a dress and a simple jacket.  If you want to learn in person, then
https://threadroom.co.nz/ offers various classes at multiple Auckland locations for both adults and children.

If there are enough beginner or intermediate sewists who would like to come and sew together at KAC, then we will look at starting a second group running on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month.  As per all groups at KAC, this would be a forum to work on your own project relatively independently, versus being in a class with a teacher.  Please register your interest with Cate on 0275 477 773.

To sew at KAC you will need to bring your own sewing machine, overlocker if you need one, sewing tools, pattern, fabric, and notions such as thread, interfacing etc.  We provide two or more ironing stations and have some basic tools available for communal use.
